Lionel Messi Wins The 2015 FIFA Ballon D’or

Adidas-sponsored soccer superstar Lionel Messi has won the 2015 FIFA Ballon D’or (“Golden Ball”), the organization announced today.

The Ballon D’or is the award is given by FIFA to the best male player in the previous year. Messi received 41.33 percent of the votes, according to FIFA, beating out Cristiano Ronaldo (27.76 percent) and Neymar da Silva Santos Junior (7.86 percent). This is the fifth time the soccer standout from Argentina has won the award.

Soccer stars took to Twitter to congratulate Messi, including Nike-sponsored Manchester United player Wayne Rooney.

Adidas launched a signature cleat for Messi, the MESSI15, on July 1, with a retail price of $220. The cleat was designed with Messi’s style of play in mind, with a focus on comfort, grip and stability on the pitch. The cleat uses materials and technology that the soccer player helped design that also use his name, including messiTOUCH for extra grip, stability and comfort; messiFRAME for a greater fit, extra stability and traction on the pitch; the round forefoot studs known as messiPRINT; and the stud configuration and outsole known as messiGAMETRAX.

Adidas also released the Messi 10/10 on Oct. 10, a cleat limited to 100 pairs in the soccer star’s size, 8.5, at the Adidas store in Barcelona.
