Nike’s First Skate Shoe With Flyknit Arrives Today

Nike has employed its Flyknit technology on shoes catering to a number of sports, from basketball to soccer and more. The technology is now featured in the skateboarding category.

The Nike Koston 3 is in stores now and retails for $150.

The shoe was designed, according to Nike, as an answer to the question, “How to land your tricks the first time you try them?” The latest signature shoe for pro skateboarder Eric Koston’s most noticeable feature is the introduction of a Flyknit collar. Although it is visually compelling, the collar is also functional.

“The Flyknit collar is about fit and sensory,” Koston said in a statement. “You feel your shoe connected from your ankle all the way down. Subconsciously, you feel the shoe doing what you want it to do.”

The Flyknit collar came as the result of a series of text messages exchanged between Koston and Shawn Carboy, Nike SB footwear design director, after seeing the Nike Magista football boot launch in March 2014, according to the brand.

The shoe also features the Nike Hyperfeel concept that was introduced in the running category, boasting a Lunarlon midsole, which is thinner around the toe area for a better feel of the skateboard and thicker in the heel. The heel also features a Zoom Air unit to help skaters land softly.

“In skate, your feet are your hands,” Carboy said in a statement. “The more feel you have for your board, the better positioned you are to pull off a trick. With Nike Hyperfeel, we’ve focused on ways to create a symbiotic relationship between your feet and your board.”
