Nike’s Roger Federer Out Of Rio Olympics With Knee Injury

The injured knee of tennis great and Nike-sponsored athlete Roger Federer will keep him out of not only the 2016 Summer Olympics but also the rest of the season.

The celebrated athlete announced via his Facebook page Tuesday that both his doctors and his team suggested further rehabilitation for the knee he had surgery on earlier this year.

“I’m extremely disappointed to announce that I will not be able to represent Switzerland at the Olympic Games in Rio and that I will also miss the remainder of the season. … The doctors advised that if I want to play on the ATP World Tour injury free for another few years, as I intend to do, I must give both my knee and body the proper time to fully recover,” he said in a letter addressed to his fans, thanking them for their continued support.

At the time of the announcement, the ATP has Federer as the No. 3 ranked men’s player in the world. Federer had a strong Wimbledon showing in July, making it to the semifinals before being taken down by Milos Raonic.

“It is tough to miss the rest of the year. However, the silver lining is that this experience has made me realize how lucky I have been throughout my career with very few injuries,” Federer wrote. “The love I have for tennis, the competition, tournaments and of course you, the fans remains intact. I am as motivated as ever and plan to put all my energy towards coming back strong, healthy and in shape to play attacking tennis in 2017.”
