A San Diego teenager is doing his part to help the city’s homeless community by donating hundreds of shoes to charities.
A perplexing SAT question inspired 17-year-old Christian Moyer to use his free time to make a difference. “We were looking at this section about college essays, and one of the prompts was, ‘Tell us about a struggle you have had in life and how you overcame it,’ ” Moyer told The San Diego Union-Tribune. “And I realized how fortunate I was not to have any struggles in life and how other people don’t have as much as I do.”
After this realization, Moyer contacted the San Diego Rescue Mission, which leads a Barefoot Sunday shoe charity at his church, and found that footwear goes a long way in helping the homeless.
“Some of the people we see will wear the same pair of shoes until there are no bottoms or tops on them. This makes a big difference for them,” said San Diego Rescue Mission CEO and president Herb Johnson.

Since Moyer began gathering shoes to donate in the fall of 2015, the total number of pairs has reached 160, with as many as 10 of them being from his own collection.
“It’s nice because it makes them realize how many shoes they have that they don’t wear, and it probably makes them feel as good as it makes me feel. I like helping other people in practical ways,” Moyer said.
