UConn Women Win Fourth Straight NCAA Championship In Nike

As predicted, the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team dominated Syracuse in the NCAA championship game Tuesday night in Indianapolis, clinching its fourth straight title — a feat that has never been done in women’s basketball. The Huskies beat the Orange by an astonishing 31 points, 82-51.

The win also brought longtime UConn head coach Geno Auriemma his 11th NCAA title, surpassing UCLA men’s coach John Wooden for the most championships in college basketball. The team’s senior star Breanna Stewart was named the game’s Most Outstanding Player for the fourth time in a row. Stewart put up 24 points and had 10 rebounds and six assists.

When asked after the game how she’s able to play so well during the tournament, Stewart said, “This is when it’s the most exciting. This is when you are going after championships, so why wouldn’t you be your best in March?”

With two minutes left in the game, Auriemma pulled out Stewart and fellow senior stars Moriah Jefferson and Morgan Tuck, and the three embraced in a giddy hug. Auriemma put in senior Briana Pulido — a walk-on in her sophomore year who is next headed to medical school — and she quickly sunk a shot and had the players and coaches going wild.

As FN has reported, this talented team is outfitted by Nike and wears the brand’s KD8 Elite player’s edition sneakers. The shoes have a white upper with navy accents and feature a husky on the heel and “UConn” on the sole of the shoe.

Stewart, Jefferson and Tuck are expected to be the first, second and fourth picks respectively in the WNBA draft on April 14 and could also try out for Team USA as the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro approaches.
