3D printing in athletic footwear is becoming more prevalent, and today, Under Armour revealed it is the next brand to try its hand with the innovative manufacturing method.
The Baltimore-based athletic giant introduced its first-ever 3D printed performance training shoe, the UA Architech, a performance silhouette boasting a functional 3D printed midsole and 3D ClutchFit auxetic upper. The shoe will be limited to 96 pairs – a nod to 1996, the year Under Armour was founded – and will be available March 18 via its website and Baltimore Brand House location. The UA Architech will retail for $300.
It was printed in Baltimore at Under Armour’s state-of-the-art Innovation Lab, according to the brand, using Autodesk Within software. The software was used to employ generative design instead of a computer algorithm to create the lattice midsole, which will provide a stable heel structure and the cushioning elements needed for strength training.

For the UA Architech, Under Armour paired the 3D printed midsole with its flow-molded 3D ClutchFit auxetic upper, which, according to the brand, will give the shoe a supportive feel that flexes and moves with the foot. Its Charged Cushioning is also added to the shoe for responsiveness and comfort.
