Under Armour Unveils First ‘Smart’ Shoe & HealthBox

Baltimore-based athletic brand Under Armour debuted its first line of Connected Fitness products today, an offering that includes its inaugural “smart” shoe, the UA SpeedForm Gemini 2 Record Equipped.

According to the brand, the shoe accumulates and stores data from the workout, including time, date, duration, distance, and splits, without hindering the athlete’s run with a tracking device. The shoe retails for $150 and will be available on Feb. 29 via the brand’s website and select specialty running stores.

“Combining the world’s largest health and fitness community with the game-changing connectivity of UA HealthBox and UA Record, we are taking Connected Fitness to another level,” said Kevin Plank, founder and CEO of Under Armour, in a statement. “With the HealthBox suite of products, athletes will be empowered with the information to make better decisions and ultimately enrich their lives in a way that’s never been done before.”

The brand also revealed HealthBox, the fitness-technology package it created with Taiwan-based mobile-phone network company HTC. The package – which retails for $400 – features the UA Band, the UA Scale and the UA Heart Rate. The HealthBox is available for preorder via the brand’s website now and ships on Jan. 22.

According to Under Armour, the UA Band is a touchscreen device that tracks things such as your resting heart rate, how many steps you take, sleep duration and calorie burn throughout the day, with a battery that lasts up to five days. The device is Bluetooth-compatible and connects to UA Record, the brand’s app to track your fitness activity, connect with a community and keep your goals on track. The band also allows you to change music, get text and phone-call notifications and pick workouts.

The UA Scale allows you to set your weight goal, track your progress, measure weight and body-fat percentage and create your own profile to store data and progress, according to the brand. The battery-operated scale has auto-recognition for up to eight users, is WiFi-enabled and syncs data to UA Record.

The UA Heart Rate, the brand’s chest strap, tracks heart rate, heart rate zone and workout intensity throughout the workout, and provides heart-rate readings by directly measuring your heart’s electrical impulses. The strap is water-resistant, Bluetooth-compatible, connects to UA Record and has a battery that lasts up to 365 hours.

In addition to the shoe and the HealthBox, Under Armour announced its upcoming headphone release, also part of the Connected Fitness platform. The brand will release two pairs of headphones — UA Headphones Wireless and UA Headphones Wireless Heart Rate – both designed by JBL. The headphone are built for durability and are designed to not fall out of your ears, according to Under Armour. The UA Headphones Wireless will retail for $180, and the UA Headphones Wireless Heart Rate will retail for $250; both are scheduled for a late spring release.
