If you’re Tom Ford’s kid, you don’t walk out of the house wearing just anything.
At only 4 years old, Jack — Ford’s son with husband Richard Buckley — already has very strong opinions on his wardrobe choices. And he’s getting quite the fashion education from Ford.
In a new interview with GQ, the 55-year-old menswear designer and Hollywood director — whose latest movie, “Nocturnal Animals,” premiered last month — gives a glimpse into his sartorial philosophy for his son.
Jack is allowed to pick his own clothes — albeit from the closet his dad has already carefully curated beforehand. That day, Jack chooses a Lacoste shirt, jeans and a pair of Adidas Stan Smith sneakers with Velcro straps.
Right now, Ford reveals to GQ, Jack is in a black phase. “Jack,” his father tells him, “black doesn’t really look good on little children. You need to wear some color.” So Jack grudgingly agrees to wear gray instead.

And while light-up shoes are a childhood rite of passage for most kids, they are strictly off-limits for Jack on school days. When he tries to sneak on his beloved pair of light-up dinosaur shoes, Ford steps in to prevent the fashion foible.
“What does Dada say about the dinosaur shoes?”
“They’re tacky.”
“And when are we allowed to wear them?”
“On weekends.”
But in other ways, it’s Jack who is inspiring his dad’s fashion viewpoint. In 2014, Ford designed a sleek black motorcycle jacket for his son. He loved it so much that he later decided to produce a limited-edition collection of leather and suede jackets for other kids.
