FN Exclusive: Chatelles Collaborates With Le Meurice Hotel On Slipper Flat

On Tuesday, Parisian shoe label Chatelles will release a limited-edition mint green and metallic pink leather version of its signature slippers inspired by the iconic Le Meurice hotel. Retailing for $226 — for the design with tassels — they will be available exclusively in the brand’s Saint-Germain-des-Prés store in the city of light and the Chatelles website.

The Dorchester Collection property, which opened in 1835, has long inspired fashion and interior designers. An Age of Enlightenment stomping ground for the likes of Ernest Hemingway, Coco Chanel and Salvador Dali, it is decorated as an ode to the ornate maximality of Versailles.

These royal connections were translated into footwear, with a special slipper style created for noted visitor Prince Albert, husband to Queen Victoria. That very shoe is not unlike the loafer versions Chatelles creates today.

The brand was founded by François du Chastel in 2013 around the premise of unique flats and is carried at Anthropologie and London’s Fleur b, among a handful of other specialty boutiques. His motto is a very French refusal: “Say no to the dictatorship of high heels and no to the banality of ballerina pumps.”

For Chastel, who recently worked with Princess Elizabeth Von Thurn Und Taxis on a capsule for fall ’16, collaborations are best when they come about naturally.

How did this collaboration come about?
Le Meurice is the first Parisian palace and is traditionally known as the hotel of royals and aristocrats. Chatelles slippers are the Parisian brand of women’s slippers inspired by the “slippers Albert”, which were first designed for Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria, who both stayed at Le Meurice mid-XIXth century.

We wanted to mix these two ideas of Parisian luxury – fashion and hotel that both translate perfectly a French art de vivre! This collaboration is thus inspired by history and reinvents a slipper traditionally worn inside by gentlemen for the modern woman for the outside.

How were your designs influenced by Le Meurice?
We designed the Chatelles x Le Meurice slippers with the best Italian leather colored with the famous vert Meurice, a unique almond green. The leather trimming and tassels are made of the Meurice nude gold that echoes the contemporary yet timeless decoration of the Parisian palace.
