Sam Edelman and Net-A-Porter are teaming up on a velvet capsule collection. The retailer selected special fall ’16 styles from the brand that will start selling on Net-a-porter.com next week.
“Velvet was a top trend that we really embraced for fall and incorporated throughout our collection,” said Edelman. “Styles include a port-wine-colored Mary Jane and a low bootie in inky navy … but my favorite is the velvet over the knee boot. So luxe!”
Here, Net-A-Porter’s buying manager for shoes and accessories, Ida Petersson, talks to FN about the must-have trend and the best ways to pair velvet shoes with your look.
Why is velvet such an important trend for fall ’16?

“There is something very special about the richness of velvet, in particular colored velvet, and it seems that it captured the imagination of the entire fashion world for fall across all categories. I think in my 15 years in fashion, I have never seen such a strong correlation across categories [RTW and accessories] and in particular for shoes such an intense concentration on one material. It stands to reason that if the fashion connoisseur were to invest in only one thing for the coming season, it should without a doubt be velvet.”
What stands out about Sam Edelman’s velvet styles?
“We love how Sam always manages to capture the spirit of each season, and our customers love that his price range is so accessible it allows them to stock up in multiples. This capsule is no exception, and we feel it has captured all the key silhouettes of the season in the must-have fabric of the season and at a truly amazing price.”
How do you suggest pairing velvet shoes for the season?
“It really depends on what silhouette you are wearing. A point-toe pump will look great with cropped jeans or trousers, a pair of platform will pair beautifully with a romantic long chiffon/silk skirt or dress, [and] a loafer is a perfect match for a masculine suit. But the beauty of the fabric is that it truly elevates your outfit — even with a ripped pair of jeans and a simple tee, any of these styles will step up your game a few notches.”
What are your expectations for how the capsule collection will perform?
“Based on the initial reaction and our customer’s response to velvet in general, I think it will be a great success, but as such, we have also backed it considerably to ensure we don’t suffer sell outs within a few weeks. At this price point, we want to ensure there is availability over a longer period.”
