Sports fans were struck with sadness Sunday when news hit that golf legend Arnold Palmer had died. Fellow golfers soon flooded social media with their condolences and tributes to Palmer, also known as “The King.”
Tiger Woods took to Twitter, posting, “Thanks Arnold for your friendship, counsel and a lot of laughs. Your philanthropy and humility are part of your legend. It’s hard to imagine golf without you or anyone more important to the game than the King.”
Prior to this, the Nike-sponsored star golfer’s last tweet to him was to wish Palmer a happy 87th birthday on Sept. 10.
President Barack Obama and former President George Bush also shared their thoughts on the iconic golfer. “Barbara and I mourn The King, Arnie, the people’s champion. He brought golf to millions by his daring and caring. We miss him already,” wrote Bush.
Obama posted on Twitter, along with an image of the two putting in the Oval Office: “Here’s to The King who was as extraordinary on the links as he was generous to others. Thanks for the memories, Arnold.”

Golf’s rising stars, including Puma’s Rickie Fowler and Under Armour’s Jordan Speith, shared memories of time spent with the legend.
Palmer died at age 87 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was a seven-time major championship winner — four Masters, a pair of British Opens and a U.S. Open — and has 62 titles on the PGA Tour. After his playing career, Palmer served as an honorary starter at the Masters.
