Beyoncé Named Runner-Up for Time’s Person of the Year

Today, Time magazine announced its Person of the Year: President-elect Donald Trump.

The publication selects a person who had the greatest influence, for better or worse, on the events of the year. In Time‘s story on Trump, writer Nancy Gibbs asks whether Trump’s influence was good or bad. “The challenge for Donald Trump is how profoundly the country disagrees about the answer,” she said.

While Time‘s choice will likely set off debates across the nation and the world, there were also some runner-ups for the honor that are worth noting. There were two politicians: Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The team behind breakthrough medical tool CRISPR was noted, as were computer hackers, who this year stole sensitive information and leaked documents relevant to the U.S. presidential election, among other things.

And finally, completing the all-powerful group is Beyoncé. The singer, songwriter, actress and designer made a bold statement this year with her visual album “Lemonade,” which addressed race, feminism and infidelity and has been nominated for the Album of Year Grammy Award.

Her subsequent Formation World Tour was a sell-out success, bringing in more than $250 million. She also spoke out in support of Clinton, appearing at a rally for her just ahead of the election.
