Aurora James, the designer behind Brother Vellies, is a newcomer who’s making big waves in the fashion world. Late last year, she was awarded the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund prize. Here, James talks about raising capital, pushing herself and why you will never find her competing with other women.
Most surprising thing you learned: “That the growing never stops. The challenges are just as hard, but they get a bit easier only because you have more practice. As an entrepreneur, there is never a point where it lets up — you always must keep pushing.”
Best advice received: “Life is about the journey and not the destination.”
Biggest challenges for women: “Raising capital. It’s just harder, or so I’ve been told 900 times by the multitude of female entrepreneurs in NYC. Not impossible, nothing is impossible — it’s just a bit harder. But that’s why we push ourselves, right?”

Best advice for cultivating more young female talent: “I think as women it is critical that we support each other. I am not interested in competing with other women. There is enough pie for all of us, and ultimately, if we band together, all ships will rise with the tide.”
