Hermès Spring 2017: Where Heritage and Technology Meet

Creative director Pierre Hardy‘s spring ’17 collection for Hermès was faithful to the house DNA but was executed with the designer’s signature innovation and panache.

Although Hardy has been designing for Hermès for some 15 years, this marks his first collection since the company acquired a stake in his own eponymous label. Sandals came with paneled squares of scarf fabric — an iris print from the spring ’17 carré collection designed by young house collaborator Benoit Pierre Emery.

At Paris Fashion Week, there was also a very haute Hermes take on the knit sneaker crafted from braided ribbons of the same scarf silk. The brand’s emblematic Chaîne d’Ancre was reimagined on chunky block heeled sandals in primary shades.

An update on the classic riding boot featured 180 perforations and rivets in a nod to the house’s equestrian heritage and its 180th anniversary next year .

“Inspiration was a mixture of the classic and modernity, the artisan heritage of the house paired with the most cutting edge technology,” said Hardy during the presentation. He also cited industrial references and the tension with more organic leatherwork, illustrated best by the glove-style pumps with open, cage-like metal heels.
