DSquared2 Men’s Spring 2017 Collection

Kinky boots. Go-go boots. A drag queen’s dream. Whatever you want to call them, DSquared2’s latest spring ’17 men’s shoes definitely kicked off Milan fashion week with a bang.

Designers Dean and Dan Caten shook up the menswear scene by showing platform glam rock ankle booties for, yes, him. Some styles were covered in glitter and bedazzled with flashy flame prints. Others were done in simpler, and dare we say wearable, black leathers and paired with sleek trousers.

Call it the David Bowie effect, but men’s heels have indeed been on the rise. Brands such as Laurence Dacade and Christian Louboutin have begun offering higher men’s heels in their commercial collections.

Though DSquared2’s buzzy shoes were likely more of a theatrical element for the show than an actual profit-grabber, it furthers the conversation: Are we at a point where genderless fashion is actually here? Are we going to keep seeing men’s heels on the runway each season? Current signs point to yes.

The platform shoes here were paired against DSquared2’s maximalist, more-is-more clothing (think sequined tank tops, or no tops at all). Ripped denim and metallic skinny jeans further accentuated the punky, costume-like feel of the looks.

The piece de resistance? When the Caten twins came out to take their bow in matching thigh-high sequined boots — but unlike some of their male models who need a little more practice, they came down the runway like they’ve been wearing heels since the womb.
