The Three Shoes That Finished Altuzarra’s Kitschy-Chic Collection

The show: This season, Joseph Altuzarra took obscure inspiration from the 1990 film “Young at Heart” starring Laura Dern and Nicolas Cage. The designer cited their “fun-loving spirit and carefree attitude” in show notes. The resulting collection featured mini gingham suiting, striped knits, ruffle details and cherry motifs.

The shoes: What would have been cutesy went undeniably saucy with wrap tie and knitted leather heels. They were done in bonbon wrapper metallics and candy apple red or dark eelskin, twisting to a knot at the toe. Pointed suede pumps had sophisticated quirk, picking up the ready-to-wear’s sparkly fruit accents and adding them to the toe for a quirky finishing touch.

The verdict: The tall and spindly proportions of these 100mm stilettos elevated the collection from girlish to womanly with a side of whimsy. But the styling trick of pairing some of them with sheer mix-and-clash hosiery was an unwelcome distraction for this superior showing.
