Missoni Men’s Spring 2017 Collection

For spring ’17, Missoni channeled Guatemalan influences. The show notes offered inspirations like “a kaleidoscope of colors dialects,” or “the ruggedness of the volcanic and mountainous terrain.”

Riffing off that, the collection took cues from South American weaving techniques, specifically embracing its appetite for color and use of graphic striping — a domain that Missoni just happens to be familiar with, given its own iconic wovens and zigzag motifs. It opened with woven Missoni knits via polos, vests and shorts, with scarves tied around the waist. As it went on, it got more western — flared pants and straw brim hats were paired with Cuban-heeled boots.

Huarache sneakers offered another ode to Guatemalan culture. Missoni collaborated with Malibu Sandals, for the second season now, to do so. Whereas last season the two brands joined forces to created huarache sandals, the spring collection here offered new woven closed-toe silhouettes, which was a nice tie-in to the clothing’s similar textures.

While the label’s sneaker collaborations with Converse are continuously proving to be hot, it was refreshing to see them partner with someone new on the runway. Though an authentic, Guatemala-based shoemaker would have made an even better collaborator.
