These Models Made History at NYFW Wearing Hijabs on the Runway

History was made on the runway at New York Fashion Week.

Every model who strutted down the catwalk on Sept. 12 at the D’Jakart spring 2017 presentation was clad in a hijab — a traditional Muslim veil. It’s the first time the hijab was teamed with each piece featured in a NYFW show.

Indonesian designer Anniesa Hasibuan said she was “humbled” by how her collection was received.

“I am so proud and thankful for everyone on the team who helped me so this event could happen, and I am so thankful to international and local media from Indonesia for exposing my show,” Hasibuan told CNN. “I did not realize the result can be this amazing, and I am thrilled and humbled by the welcome reaction given.”

Hasibuan showcased evening gowns and ready-to-wear pieces that were teamed with booties and sandals. Some of the footwear styles incorporated mixed-material fabrications with open-toe and T-strap profiles.
