Prada Brings Back Old Hollywood Glamour for Spring

The Show: Always a dreamer, designer Miuccia Prada looked both to the past and the future this season at Milan Fashion Week. She combined nods to Old Hollywood glamour — think feather boa trims on pants and skirts, retro plaid jackets, sweetheart necklines — and combined them with modernistic details. A sweet floral dress, for example, was worn over a printed button-up. A feather-trimmed skirt was mixed with a leather peacoat with oversized cargo pockets. The look was fresh — a juxtaposition that’s been done many times before, but rarely like this.

The Shoes: As the clothes did, the footwear this season also mixed the old and the new. From the front, a pair of crisscross kitten sandals with feathered ankle trim was oh-so Greta Garbo — theatrical, nostalgic — yet the slingback stripes had graphic striping. The same went for pointy T-strap kitten heels, a typically demure style that was amped up with embellished paillettes. The label’s signature clunky shoes made an appearance, too: crisscross slides, for example, had flatform soles.

The Verdict: With just the right amount of kitsch, Prada nailed an offbeat collection that still felt of-the-moment. A few pieces felt out of left field, such as the high kimono collars or turtleneck coats. Simple T-strap kitten heels fell too flat. But a constancy flowed throughout the offering that so many other shows often lack.
