Meghan Markle stepped out in quite the throwback look today as she joined husband Prince Harry at the 100th anniversary celebration for Britain’s Royal Air Force.
The Duchess of Sussex looked regal in a classic midnight-blue Dior dress, reminiscent of late couturier Christian Dior’s “New Look” designs, which revolutionized women’s fashion following the austerity of World War II.
Markle’s impeccably tailored dress featured a nipped-in waist, fit-and-flare skirt and bateau neckline. She accessorized with a jaunty Stephen Jones fascinator, Cartier earrings and a pair of nude Dior pointy-toe pumps.
In keeping with royal etiquette, Markle has eschewed open-toe shoes this summer, instead opting for classic pumps in neutral shades such as cream, tan and black. She reportedly wears her heels a size or two too big in order to protect her feet. (Standing for long periods at a time, particularly in warmer weather, can cause the feet to swell, leading to painful blisters.)

Also in attendance, her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, chose a simple pastel blue coat dress by Alexander McQueen. Like Markle, she topped off her elegant look with a fascinator and classic nude pumps. She also wore the prestigious Air Cadets Dacre brooch — the highest award a female cadet can earn — giving her outfit a touch of sparkle.
It’s been a busy week for Markle, who has jumped right into her royal duties following her May 19 wedding. Yesterday, she attended the christening of her 2-month-old nephew, Prince Louis, at St. James’s Palace in London.
At the conclusion of today’s RAF festivities, which included a commemorative service at Westminster Abbey and a historic flypast over Buckingham Palace by 100 aircraft, Markle will travel with Prince Harry to Dublin for a two-day visit. The couple will meet with government leaders, attend a Gaelic sports festival, tour the Irish Immigration Museum and visit Trinity College to see the historic Book of Kells.
