Gap Steps Up in Support of Casey Goodson Jr.’s Family After Fatal Police Shooting in Ohio

Gap Inc. is stepping up to show its support for the family of Casey Goodson Jr., a Black man and former Gap Inc. employee who was fatally shot by police at his home last week in Columbus, Ohio.

“We are mourning the loss of Casey Goodson Jr., a Gap Inc. employee who was fatally shot by police at his home, and we’re in touch with his family to provide support during this time,” the company posted on Twitter, including a link to Goodson’s family GoFundMe page.

Reports indicate that Goodson — who had returned to his home following a dentist appointment — was fatally shot on Dec. 4 by a 17-year veteran of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, who has been identified as deputy Jason Meade.

The shooting is still under investigation, but has led to national outrage, as well as calls for justice for Goodson’s family and accountability on the part of police officials. What’s more, local newspaper The Columbus Dispatch, citing social media posts and emails, indicated that there are protests planned for today, including one at 6 p.m. outside the sheriff’s office building downtown, with a march to the statehouse.

Goodson’s death marks the latest in a string of police shootings of Black men and women in the United States this year, all of which have led to national unrest and heightened conversations around the need for racial equality in America.

The police killing of George Floyd in May and Breonna Taylor in March sparked protests across the U.S. and around the world, as well as compelled major fashion companies to join the fray. Brands and retailers such as Nike, New Balance, Nordstrom and Adidas were among those that shared social media posts supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, and that pledged to take bigger steps to support the Black community and their Black employees.
