How Much Money the US Open Tennis Winners Make Will Blow Your Mind

The US Open has officially begun, with massive prize money on the horizon for numerous tennis champions. The New York-based event, which ends on Sept. 12, finds athletes competing for various rewards that total $57.5 million. This amount is the highest in the US Open’s history, following 2019’s $57.2 million in rewards. As we look to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center over the next week — which happens to take place at the same time as New York Fashion Week — we’ve broken down the earnings that the world’s top tennis players will leave the competition with this year.

How Much Will the Winners Take Home?

The tournament’s men’s and women’s singles champions will earn $2.5 million each. The amount is significantly lower compared to last year’s US Open, due to a $500,000 decrease.

How Much Money Do Runners-Up Earn?

The competition’s runners-up will still leave the court with a large reward. Each runner-up will receive $1.25 million, which is also a decrease compared to last year’s $1.5 million.

Who Are the Ones to Watch?

Since Serena and Venus Williams, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, among others, have withdrawn from the competition due to a range of injuries, this years’ top players have varied on multiple occasions. Naomi Osaka is one of the main athletes to beat this year, due to her rising media presence from openly discussing mental health after withdrawing from Wimbledon. Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff and Ashleigh Barty have also proven to be top competitors after winning their respective matches so far.
For men’s matches, Novak Djokovic, Deniil Medvedev and Stefano Tsitsipas are currently ranking in the top three positions for the Open’s Top Seeds. Alexander Zverev has also become one to watch, after his 19 – 11 win over Sam Querrey today.

What Do Doubles Winners Earn?

The reward for doubles winners has increased compared to last year. The winning pairs for men’s and women’s doubles will each leave the competition with $600,000, compared to 2020’s $400,000. Runner-ups will earn $330,000, with semifinalists earning $164,000 and quarterfinalists leaving with $93,000.
