Here’s How Mary J. Blige’s Thigh-High Boots for the Super Bowl Halftime Show Were Made

Mary J. Blige dazzled more than 100 million people who tuned into Super Bow LVI on Sunday, Feb. 13. Alongside fellow hip-hop heavyweights, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar and 50 cent, Blige took the stage at the Super Bowl halftime show.

The Queen of Hip Hop and Soul performed her iconic hit “Family Affair” and was accompanied by sparkling backup dancers, who later disappeared while she sang, “No More Drama” solo on stage.

To commemorate the history-making occasion, Blige served up some serious style in silver metallic look by Dundas. The long-sleeve embellished crop top outfit was complete with a signature lace-up detailing and matching boy shorts. Blige accessorized her glittery garment with a matching fedora hat, gloves and large hoop earrings from Sister Love. (The Sister Love collection has since launched exclusively on Revolve and features three elegant styles, each made with 10K gold and diamonds.)

As for her footwear, the Grammy Award-winning R&B songstress slipped into her favorite shoe silhouette, a pair of thigh-high boots. The boots were custom-made by Sergio Rossi for Dundas and included a pointed-toe and a short chunky stacked heel, all embellished with silver animalier patterned mirrors, Swarovski crystals and pearl beadwork.

“Mary wanted a sexy design that combined her style with signature Dundas glamour and reflected her style, but also allowed her to dance and of course feel secure and comfortable throughout the performance,” Peter Dundas, co-founder and creative director at Dundas World told FN. He added, “Mary has a unique way of reflecting people’s emotions and feelings with her songs and lyrics therefore having her reflect with mirror embellishments becomes a perfect metaphor to express the icon she is.”

According to the designer, there were 20 people embroidering Blige’s boots, which were inspired by the snow leopard, and work started November 2021.

The custom boots will be exclusively available upon request and the price point is yet to be established, said Riccardo Sciutto, Sergio Rossi Group CEO.

In addition, the Dundas performance look has turned into NFTs, providing exclusive AR try on utility and fashion experiences to the owners. The Big Game drop by Dundas x Dressx consists of four NFT artworks: the performance look of Mary J. Blige, created by Dundas and digitized by Dressx, as well as the original sketches of the outfit created by Peter Dundas. The collection features a range of experiences for token holders, including tickets to the Dundas New York Fashion Week show, exclusive AR try-on via the Dressx app, and custom digital fittings of the garments onto the owners and more. The sale began Feb. 14.
