Long before adidas became a staple in streetwear, adidas was a soccer brand. It lived and breathed the sport with its cleat innovations and jersey materials meant for the field. Every so often, the brand comes in and reminds us of that legacy. The brand did exactly that this week by dropping FIFA World Cup 2022 gear — jerseys and soccer balls on the top of the list — that are all available to shop now.

adidas has been supplying goods for the World Cup since the ’70s, most notably in the form of the game-day balls. This is the 14th year in a row that adidas has made the World Cup match ball. It’s a big responsibility, considering that the best players from around the world will be relying on them to perform. For the 2022 tournament in Qatar, adidas designed the “Al Rihla” ball (which means “the journey” in Arabic).

In addition to the match ball, adidas also made home and away jerseys for teams across the globe: Argentina, Germany, Japan, Mexico and Spain. Each of the jerseys are designed with the place they are representing in mind. The Mexican away jersey features Mixtec art and Quetzalcoatl’s serpent body on the inside of the collar. Germany’s jerseys are done up in the color of the country’s flag, the purple-colored Argentine jerseys represent gender equality, and Japan’s home kit has an origami three-legged-crow-inspired design.

adidas is also bringing its eye for sustainability to the kits, which will be seen by people all over the world. The fabric is made from 100-percent recycled polyester, half of which is Parley Ocean Plastic. That’s the plastic collected on islands, beaches and shorelines to prevent ocean polluting. It’s all part of adidas’ End Plastic Waste campaign. Putting that idea to practice on one of the biggest world stages around is no small feat.
