How Crocs Is Progressing Towards Its Net Zero Goal

Crocs has released its latest report detailing its progress towards the company’s sustainability and equity goals.

In its 2023 Crocs Comfort report, the Broomfield, Colo.-footwear company highlighted its commitment to become net zero by 2040, a target that it updated from 2030 last year, and outlined additional actions that it made towards reaching its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals.

The report, released on Thursday, Crocs said it continued to increase the amount of bio-circular, bio-based content in its Croslite compound. Created in partnership with global materials science company Dow, Croslite is made from sustainably sourced plant-based waste and by-products. And since August 2023, the company said it has exceeded a monthly average of 20 percent bio-circular content within its Croslite compound, achieving the milestone set out in 2022.

The company said in the report that it is starting to see the impacts from this initiative, driving a 6.1 percent reduction of the carbon footprint of its classic clog compared to 2021 baseline, which supports progress toward both its goal of 50 percent carbon reduction for the classic clog by 2030 and ambition of net zero by 2040.

Circularity was also in the spotlight at Crocs last year. The company launched the pilot program of its shoe takeback initiative – “Old Crocs. New Life.” This program has since been expanded to all retail stores and online customers in the continental United States as of last month.

“We are proud of the progress our teams made in 2023 in support of our ‘Purpose’ strategy, both in making improvements and strengthening programs toward positive impact for people and planet,” Deanna Bratter, vice president and global head of sustainability at Crocs, Inc., said in a statement. “How we grow matters, and we recognize we have a responsibility to infuse our purpose into everything we do so that we can continue to do good for our business, the planet, our communities and our employees.”

As for the company’s charitable actions in 2023, Crocs said it developed a more focused strategy for how it uses its voice and resources to support nonprofit impact partners’ efforts last year. This new strategy resulted in a donation of more than $12 million in funds and shoes in 2023.

Crocs added in the report that it has also refined its inclusivity strategy to further support its “Come As You Are” ethos across employee experience and marketing practices to support a more inclusive environment for both employees and fans.

“Our teams achieved impressive top- and bottom-line growth in 2023 while continuing to move the needle on our purpose,” Andrew Rees, chief executive officer of Crocs, Inc., added. “In 2024, we plan to further align our successful business growth with greater positive impact for all our stakeholders.”
