Dick’s Sporting Goods Is Hiring 8,600 Workers This Holiday Season

Dick’s Sporting Goods is aiming to hire thousands of seasonal employees this year as it gears up for the holiday season.

The sporting goods retail giant announced today its plan to hire up to 8,600 seasonal associates throughout the country, starting on Oct. 3 with “National Signing Day,” an annual recruiting event that is now in its sixth year.

This number is down from both last year’s hiring event, which sought to hire 9,000 seasonal employees, and 2021’s record of 10,000 workers — the largest number of seasonal associates in the company’s history.

The company noted that these positions are available across its portfolio of stores — Dick’s Sporting Goods, Public Lands, Dick’s House of Sport and Going, Going, Gone. Employee benefits include competitive pay, optional DailyPay and an associate discount of up to 25 percent off.

Interested candidates are encouraged to apply online and then visit their local store on National Signing Day to be interviewed and meet the team. Holiday hiring will continue beyond National Signing Day until all positions are filled, the company said.

“Our seasonal teammates are key to creating a great holiday shopping experience for our athletes,” Julie Lodge-Jarrett, SVP, chief people and purpose officer at Dick’s Sporting Goods, said in a statement. “We’re looking forward to offering an unparalleled in-store experience with the most in-demand brands and styles, and having a knowledgeable and friendly team is critical.”

This news comes at the same time Dick’s announced that all its stores, as well as its distribution centers, will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23. The stores will reopen on Black Friday.

Other retailers like Macy’s and Target also recently announced their holiday hiring goals this month.

Early estimates for the holiday season point to a slight increase in consumer spending as inflation continues to ease. Holiday retail sales are likely to increase between 3.5 percent and 4.6 percent in 2023, according to Deloitte’s annual holiday retail forecast released last week.

Overall, Deloitte’s retail and consumer products practice projects holiday sales will total $1.54 trillion to $1.56 trillion during the November-to-January timeframe. In 2022, holiday sales grew by 7.6 percent in the same period.
