eBay and NBA Star Anthony Davis Launch a Virtual ‘Santa Sneaker Drop’ Featuring Several Grails

With Christmas almost here, eBay and NBA star Anthony Davis will launch today a virtual “Santa Sneaker Drop.”

During the event — which begins today at 12 p.m. ET and comes to an end Dec. 24 at 11:59 p.m. ET —  participants can get one of 500 pairs of coveted sneakers using augmented reality.

The experience is activated by using the camera on your mobile device to open a virtual sneaker box that comes down a chimney, which will let you know if you won a pair. Everyone gets five chances per day by following the instructions on the “Santa Sneaker Drop” site (eBaysantasneakerdrop.com) which should be accessed from an iOS or Android mobile device.

Some of the sneakers included in the drop are the Travis Scott x Air Jordan 1, the Sean Wotherspoon x Nike Air Max 97/1, the Off-White x Air Jordan 1 “Chicago” and several others.

Aside from the way to win, eBay and Davis created storytelling around the drop.

In a brief video, Santa Claus asked Davis for help delivering hot sneakers, however the baller ran into trouble handling the sleigh, swerved mid-flight and more than 500 pairs fell off the sleigh. In an effort to make up for it, Davis partnered with eBay to turn the dropped sneakers into a sneaker drop.

“I never imagined having a chance to team up with the greatest big man of all time, and I’m grateful that eBay has given me this once in a lifetime opportunity to work with Santa this holiday,” Davis said in a statement. “Sneakers are at the top of millions of wish lists this year, and we’re hoping to make holiday dreams come true for sneakerheads across the country.”

Additionally, eBay stated it has teamed up with Soles4Souls to have 40,000 pairs of new sneakers distributed to kids experiencing homelessness in the U.S.

“For most kids, having the right sneakers to wear for a game of pickup basketball is a given,” Soles4Souls president and CEO Buddy Teaster said in a statement. “But that’s not the case when families are struggling with homelessness. We believe every kid deserves to have their basic needs met — including a pair of shoes on their feet. This donation couldn’t come at a better time, and a superstar like Anthony Davis brings a whole new level of awareness to our program.”
