Salvatore Ferragamo Steps Up Counterfeit Fight

Salvatore Ferragamo is continuing its anti-counterfeiting efforts, which are especially focused on China and the Web.

The company said that in 2015 it intercepted and blocked 91,000 online advertisements for counterfeit products. In addition, 140 domain names and illegal Websites, mainly managed by Chinese individuals, were recovered or cancelled.

“In 2015, we further expanded the number of e-commerce sites that we monitor,” said Ferragamo Group chairman Ferruccio Ferragamo. “On the Chinese market, we have continued and ramped up our offline checks, targeting trade fairs and resellers in particular.” Ferragamo added that the company had also completed the official process for recognition as a well-known brand in China, a key law enforcement tool, which will help the company saving time and money in the counterfeit battle.

Starting with the pre-fall 2014 collection, the company has been inserting microchips into the women’s shoes, guaranteeing product authenticity, as well as the possibility to track products. The brand also extended the use of the microchip to men’s shoes with the Cruise 2015 collection, while this has been inserted in women’s small leather goods, luggage and bags with the fall 2015 range.

A further success in Salvatore Ferragamo’s measures against fakes was the seizure and destruction of more than 12,500 counterfeit products. The Chinese customs authorities confiscated more than 12,400 fake goods leaving the country and seized in excess of 34,000 counterfeit products in 2015. The estimated value of the goods exceeds $17 million. Belts accounted 60 percent of the seized products.
