Prime Day Sale Wars: Amazon vs. Walmart

Amazon is gearing up for its first-ever Prime Day tomorrow, which it claims will feature “more deals than Black Friday.” Walmart is battling back with a sale of its own — and some anti-Amazon sentiments to go along with it.

To take advantage of “Prime Day,” you have to be an Amazon Prime member, which costs $99 per year. (If you’re not a member, you can sign up for a free 30-day trial membership to take advantage of the deals.) The site is advertising 30 percent off select footwear purchases and will feature a host of other “pop-up sales” throughout the day, many of which are focused on electronics, like TVs and tablets.

In response to Amazon’s huge promotion of the event, Walmart.com is advertising its everyday low prices. In addition to “rollback” prices and a lower free-shipping minimum, Walmart promises “some special atomic deals.”

Fernando Madeira, president and CEO of Walmart.com, wrote in a blog post: “If you’ve shopped Walmart.com, you’ll know that every day is a special day where everyone has access to the same low prices we offer.  We mean everyone: you, your neighbor, your boss, your best friend … all of whom are looking for the best price on the things they want and need. We’ve heard some retailers are charging $100 to get access to a sale. But the idea of asking customers to pay extra in order to save money just doesn’t add up for us.”
