Top 10 Shoe Moments At The MTV Video Music Awards

The 2016 MTV Video Music Awards went off with a bang on Sunday night in New York City. Top performers included Beyoncé, Rihanna and Britney Spears. And like past years, the 2016 VMAs provided unforgettable moments and unforgettable fashion. Here, Footwear News looks at the best styles throughout the show at Madison Square Garden.

DJ Khaled

The Snapchat guru and holder of all the “keys” was a major presence at the VMAs. DJ Khaled hosted the MTV preshow and arrived on the red carpet in Gucci from head to toe. During the awards show, he appeared on-screen with a pair of Banned Air Jordan 1s and Air Jordan 31s around his neck. The anticipated sneaker release of the Air Jordan XXXI “Banned” arrives in stores globally on Sept. 23.

Rihanna

The recipient of the coveted Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award performed four times throughout the show, giving fans a look at her unique style. Memorable moments included her kickoff performance costume, which featured pink fur shoes by Comme des Garçons and a custom Hood by Air jumpsuit, and the look during her third act, when she wore Vetements x Manolo Blahnik thigh-high boots from the Vetements fall ’16 couture collection.

Britney Spears

The pop star returned to the VMA stage for the first time in a decade. Spears performed “Make Me,” the lead single from her ninth studio album, “Glory,” with featured rapper G-Eazy. Clad in a yellow bodysuit and matching boots, she gave fans quite the show filled with her signature dance moves and hair flips.

Beyoncé

The singer performed a selection of songs off her sixth studio album, “Lemonade.” Beyoncé rocked the stage in custom Christian Louboutin thigh-high boots and a lace bodysuit. Nominated for 11 awards at the 2016 MTV VMAs, she took home the top honor of the night, for Video of the Year, along with Best Female Video and Best Breakthrough Long Form Video.

Blue Ivy Carter

Blue Ivy made her red-carpet debut with mom Beyoncé at the MTV Video Music Awards. The 4-year-old opted for a tulle dress and Giuseppe Zanotti Dolly pink sandals with sparkly straps.

Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj

The two artists looked pretty in pink during their performance of “Side to Side.” Grande started out on a spinning bike and soon hopped off to show her sky-high platform booties. Minaj, who is featured on the song, joined Grande onstage in pink thigh-high boots and a skintight bodysuit.

Kanye West

The rapper debuted his music video for “Fade” on the VMA stage, wearing his Yeezy Boost 1050 boots. Before the exclusive premiere, West gave a four-minute speech, touching on Taylor Swift, Ray J and Amber Rose. He said, “My role models are artists/merchants. There’s less than 10 that I can name in history: Truman, Ford, Hughes, Disney, Jobs, West.”

Future

The rapper and newest Reebok partner took the stage on Sunday night in Balenciaga metallic sneakers. After an introduction by Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps, Future performed his hit “Commas.”

Rita Ora

The singer was one of the clear standouts on the VMA carpet this year when it came to the shoes. Ora made a statement in Marc Jacobs platforms.

Jimmy Fallon

The “Tonight Show” host made an appearance as Ryan Lochte. Dressed in Nike from head to toe, and sporting Lochte’s infamous silver hair, Fallon poked fun at the Olympic swimmer and even got some laugh from Phelps, Lochte’s teammate. Fallon presented Beyoncé with the Video of the Year Award.
