For nearly a decade, Rihanna has made her way to the MTV Video Music Awards. Whether it be to perform or to collect a coveted Moonman trophy, the “Work” singer’s style has transcended since her VMA debut in 2005. This year, Rihanna is nominated for two awards and will be accepting the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.
Before the show kicks off at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Sunday, Footwear News takes a look back at RiRi’s red-carpet moments from the VMAs.
In 2013, the year Miley Cyrus infamously twerked onstage with Robin Thicke, Rihanna looked laid back in a vintage tee and jeans from her River Island collection paired with Manolo Blahnik sandals. Three years later, Rihanna teamed up with Blahnik to release a limited-edition capsule collection.

Rihanna took home the Video of the Year Award in 2012 for her hit “We Found Love.” The songstress opted for tan Manolo Blahnik sandals and an Adam Selman white dress. Rihanna also performed “Cockiness” and “We Found Love” in an all-red ensemble paired with Air Jordans.
Fast forward to her current Anti World Tour, and Rihanna is once again wearing go-to designer Adam Selman as she opens the show and later changes into multiple pairs of Manolo Blahnik pumps.
In 2008, Rihanna opened the show with her song “Disturbia.” She made an appearance on the red carpet in a pair of statement heels designed by Cesare Paciotti, and later in the evening, she joined T.I. onstage to perform “Live Your Life.”
Rihanna rocked a hot pink Armani Privé gown in 2007, the same year she won her first Video of the Year award for “Umbrella.” (She is the only female artist to win two awards in that category.) During the show, Rihanna hit the stage as part of Chris Brown’s performance to sing “Umbrella.”
In 2005, Rihanna made her VMA debut. Puma’s creative director was only 17 years old and had just released her debut single, “Pon de Replay.” More than 10 years later, Rihanna will grace the stage at the MTV Video Music Awards to perform a medley of hits.
She follows Kanye West, who received the Video Vanguard honor last year, as well as s Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears.
