Even though tonight’s Screen Actors Guild Awards don’t carry the same high-stakes drama and public intrigue as some of the other award shows this season, there was still plenty of star power and fashion punch.
Actors began showing their red-carpet styles early Sunday night in advance of the 8 p.m. ceremony, held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
Best male actor in a leading role Eddie Redmayne stood out from the pack with his memorable performance in “The Theory of Everything” and by showing his dashing attire.
Redmayne, who was up against leading men Steve Carell (“Foxcatcher”), Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Imitation Game”), Jake Gyllenhaal (“Nightcrawler”) and Michael Keaton (“Birdman”), wore a black tux with patent lace-ups.
The actors are familiar faces to one another, since they were all nominated for similar awards at this year’s Golden Globes, which took place earlier this month. Keaton, who won the Golden Globe on Jan. 11 for Best Actor for his performance in “Birdman,” wore a pair of Christian Louboutin velvet smoking slippers to that event.

It wasn’t just his style at the Globes that was noteworthy, however. He gave a particularly emotional speech, thanking his family — and the film’s director: “Alejandro, there’s not a person in this room who won’t show up for your next gig, my brother. I’m telling you, just name the place, you name the time and, not just me, there’s not an actor or actress in this room who won’t show up. Thanks for being a true artist. Thanks for letting me be part of this unbelievably gutsy, unapologetic look at human nature.”
Meanwhile, at tonight’s awards, the men’s market continued to look sophisticated with classic footwear. Best Actor winner Redmayne sported black patent lace-ups, while nominee Keaton paired black suede loafers with a gray tuxedo featuring black trimmed lapel.
But it was Redmayne’s acceptance speech that hit a high point.
“I’d like to dedicate this award to people around the world living with ALS, to those who have lost their lives to this brutal disease,” he said.
Redmayne later thanked the Stephen Hawking family, who the actor portrays in the movie, “for allowing someone who gave up science when they were 14 years old to enter your orbit.”
