Pope Francis made a historic speech in front of a joint session of Congress today in Washington, D.C., calling on Americans to embrace immigrants and work to combat climate change.
After his speech, he greeted 200 homeless and poverty-stricken people for a lunch at Catholic Charities in Washington.
Amongst the fanfare, TPM captured audio of a woman on CNN’s live feed saying she was going to “take my shoe off and throw it at his head” as he made his way to speak to Congress.
The woman was standing in the crowd outside the House Chamber as Pope Francis entered, but it’s unclear who she is, and it doesn’t seem that she actually threw her shoe.
This is certainly not the first time someone has plotted to throw a shoe at a public figure. In fact, several times the offender has followed through with the shoe-throwing.

In 2008, then-President George W. Bush was making a speech in Baghdad when Muntadhar al-Zaidi threw his shoes at Bush. Countless other public figures, politicians and leaders worldwide have experienced similar incidents. Last year, a protestor chucked a shoe at Hillary Clinton during a speech in Las Vegas. And a flying shoe injured One Direction singer Harry Styles during the band’s tour stop in Glasgow.
Pope Francis’ trip is one that many U.S. law enforcement members are calling the greatest security challenge the nation has ever faced. Francis will head to New York this afternoon and then to Philadelphia.
