Two days after losing to the Cincinnati Bengals in a hard fought game on Sunday, the San Diego Chargers went on a shoe-shopping spree.
Players from the 1-1 team, which usually relaxes on Tuesdays, did a bit of good off the gridiron by taking part in a local shoe drive to help children.
The team gave away more than 1,100 new pairs of shoes, from five stores across San Diego County. The stores included Payless ShoeSource, among others.
“This is our day off, but we all like to give back because we were all kids at some point,” said cornerback Jason Verrett in a statement. “We wanted new shoes and I remember what that was like to get a new pair. I’m happy to come here and see them smile when they pick out any shoe in the store they’d like. It’s definitely a blessing.”

The shoe drive is in its 27th year.
Wide receiver Keenan Allen was also on hand. The Bolts playmaker said he enjoyed giving back but now that he is a father, doing so was more special.
“This always feels good to see these kids get new shoes,” he explained. “When I was a kid, it was amazing to get new shoes. I wore them as soon as I would get them and wore them out. To see that same look in their eyes is what makes this so rewarding.”
