The Best Dressed at the 2024 Golden Globes

As the unofficial kickoff to awards season each January, the Golden Globe Awards set the tone for what red carpet fashion and celebrity style will look like in the coming months — and even the rest of the year.

While the event certainly helps to predict forthcoming celebrity red carpet moments, the Golden Globes and its awards season takeoff also help to drive the trends that will influence the evening and formal wear market, from wedding guest and bridal party looks to proms and parties around the world. From gown silhouettes to key color trends, red carpet awards shows such as the Golden Globes offer viewers and fans both inspiration and a sneak peek at what designers will be offering in stores and on the runways for the rest of the year.

This year’s Golden Globes arrived after a serious fashion dry spell for Hollywood. A summer and early fall of writers’ and actors’ strikes resulted in a dearth of celebrity fashion moments; even off the red carpet, as actors remained modest in their fashion roles out of solidarity with their fellow actors and writers.

Tonight’s red carpet saw fashion come roaring back. But wasn’t the sort of “revenge dressing” we saw a few years ago. Instead, celebrities looked to ways that they could make a statement but keep things classic; to not look like they were trying too hard. In other words, they did it the Old Hollywood way.

Many turned to one of the oldest tricks in the book: wearing red. Out of the entire crimson wave (sorry), it was Ayo Edebiri who clocked one of the top looks of the night — and ended up winning a Globe for best actress in a comedy series, to boot. The actress’ red silk and chiffon Prada column gown with a voluminous but concise train and matching red satin pumps rose to the occasion.

Others turned to a palette cleanser for classic statement looks. There were many all-white looks on the 2024 Golden Globes red carpet, from vintage Balmain on Elle Fanning to Keri Russell’s fringed Jil Sander tank dress, a standout of the night for its unexpected texture.

So, too, was Natasha Lyonne’s Schiaparelli gown, with its exaggerated boning and texture, which came from matte vertical sequins. A pair of oversized oyster shell earrings from Schiaparelli designer Daniel Roseberry made the look even more memorable, and there were reportedly a pair of matching cream boots underneath that gown.

There was also plenty of black on the red carpet once more this year, though not with the sort of symbolism it held in 2018 when attendees showed solidarity with the Me Too movement. This year’s classic black looks at the show were timeless — and maybe a little boring, save for Rosamund Pike’s vintage Dior lace gown, worn wonderfully and weirdly with a Philip Treacy veil that the actress chose to hide a scar from a skiing accident.

The return to Old Hollywood dressing for the new age extended down to the toes, where most attendees matched their colorful gowns with their heels, primarily in all of those red looks. A red satin pump is the new evening shoe for 2024, according to the Golden Globes red carpet.

There were a few other surprising colors, namely in lavender, from actresses Helen Mirren (in Dolce & Gabbana) and Brie Larson in Prada. Both wore grey/silver heels with their looks, which both embodied the evening’s fresh round of optimism. So did Taylor Swift’s green sequined bustier gown from Gucci, matched with green metallic Christian Louboutin pumps. Happy new year, indeed.
