Powerful statement dressing was destined to make a return at this year’s Golden Globes Awards – and awards season in general. With months of labor strikes rattling the entertainment industry last year, late fall agreements seemed to unleash a wellspring of celebrity style moments as stars and their glam teams planned their red carpet premieres and looked ahead to 2024 awards events.
Their go-to for stepping out with a bang? Classic, lipstick red, done in sweeping gowns and even menswear tuxedo looks. Best of all, most of the looks had the footwear to match — literally.
The turn to the color makes sense. Not only is the hue a classic old Hollywood choice, it’s also a bona fide trend from the runways, spanning from fall ’23 to spring ’24 collections, a key color choice after a year of “quiet luxury” turns to a more even-keeled approach to classics.
Supporting Actress nominee and “The Bear” actress Ayo Edebiri stepped out in a custom Prada look, with matching satin sling back pumps (a bestseller from the Italian brand and a continuing trend for 2024.

“Only Murders in the Building” star Selena Gomez stepped out in an Armani Privé gown with a knotted bodice and an asymmetrical slashed hemline, which perfectly showed off the matching satin pumps that she also wore with the look. Matchy-matchy is ok this season, it seems.

Florence Pugh, meanwhile, continued her Valentino love affair with a see-through strappy chiffon gown decorated with red rosettes. We can’t see them here, but we are betting that there are a pair of red heels underneath the frock, either platforms or classic sandals or pumps.

Both new and old school stars opted for red. Julianne Moore’s Bottega Veneta gown was simple and classic save for its U-shaped neckline, a subtle update for a strapless gown.

Even menswear was seeing red. “Saltburn” star Barry Keoghan wore a Louis Vuitton red tuxedo straight from Pharrell’s debut runway collection. Complete with necklaces, lapel pin and bejeweled skater chain, the look is fitting for Keoghan’s moment in the spotlight.
