Met Gala 2016 Hits, Misses & Most Notable Shoe Moments

Another Met Gala has come and gone, and with it, an onslaught of distinctive, daring and undoubtedly polarizing looks that attempted to match the theme of “Manus x Machina.”

Without further ado, here are the most standout shoe styles of the night.

First off, the boot brigade that was Louis Vuitton’s gaggle of femmes were the freshest of the bunch in techy lug-sole boots. Selena Gomez, Alicia Vikander, Jennifer Connelly, Grimes and Michelle Williams all wore a similar style, which nicely toughened-up their flippy, abbreviated hemlines. Unfortunately, co-chair Taylor Swift veered off-course in a gladiatorial strappy stiletto boot style that was not quite as cool and looked a little ill-fitting.

While shoes were more often than not obstructed from view, in a few looks they took center stage. There was Bella Hadid in her sleek socklike fitted Givenchy over-the-knee boots, which immediately modernized her noir ball gown. And in a sea of the same-old strappy stiletto sandal, Uma Thurman’s feathered Vivien version by Jimmy Choo was refreshing.

Likewise for Karolina Kurkova, who wore matching Marchesa laser-cut-out sandals with her light-up dress, which changed color depending on tweets and was very on-theme. Amy Schumer also looked fantastic in Alexander Wang, paired with matching red spiky stilettos.

Kylie Jenner wins points for picking a less-conventional pair than most — hers were Aquazzura silver sandals with sweet ankle ties that complemented her glam robotic Balmain gown. Sister Kim Kardashian West wore a similar sleek T-strap stiletto by Tom Ford, one of her red-carpet go-tos. Kendall Jenner, meanwhile, missed the mark in ill-fitting white sandals by Versace. Toe overhang is never a good look.

As for the gents, Zayn Malik nailed the theme in a “Terminator”-sleeved tux by Versace with spiffy custom Jimmy Choo matte patent oxfords. Wiz Khalifa stuck with his current shoe obsession, Gucci’s classic horsebit loafers. And co-chair Idris Elba cut the sharpest line in head-to-toe Tom Ford, right down to his shiny dress shoes. Odell Beckham looked debonair in a silk suit paired with Del Toro loafers, which designer Matthew Chevellard hand-delivered in the nick of time. Jaden Smith sported Louis Vuitton’s Western boots tipped with chrome.

As for the misses, while Solange’s Loewe boots were quite eye-catching, they were overpowered by all that yellow. Adriana Lima looked lovely in Giambattista Valli, until one spotted those ankle tattoos, which were in discord with her demure dress. Madonna’s Givenchy boots appeared to be pinching her legs in an unflattering way. And Brie Larson’s stunning Proenza Schouler was brought down by overly heavy pumps.
