North West Does Traditional Dressing in Elevated Geta Sandals and Floral Kimono in Japan With Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian shared a lengthy carousel of images on her Instagram yesterday featuring her daughter North West alongside a friend. The photos were taken during their trip to Japan.

Styled with tabi socks, West donned a pair of Japanese Geta sandals. The footwear featured a thong-style silhouette with fabric, called hanao, separating the big toe and second toe. The shoes also featured raised stilt-like detailing on the soles made of wood that acted to elevate West’s feet.

The Geta sandal was created for practical reasons in order to raise the wearer’s feet above dirt, snow and water. The earliest known pair of geta was found in a neolithic archaeological site near Ningbo, Zhejing, China and dated back to the Liangzhu culture (3400–2250 BCE). The style can be likened to modern-day flip-flops and is often worn with a Kimono or Yukata, like West’s application.

As for her outfit, the 10-year-old was outfitted in a kimono in a pastel pink shade featuring what appeared to be floral motifs. The historical garment was belted with a floral strip of fabric called an Obi and a decorative bright pink lace called an Obijime.

Kimonos have multiple pieces to them with various names. The garment has a very rich history and acts as a symbol of longevity and good fortune. Each piece of the kimono has a different meaning. Kardashian took a less traditional approach, clad in a cheetah-printed floor-length trenchcoat dress from Balenciaga.

While she’s starting to style footwear in the heeled variety, North’s shoe style is often sporty and comfortable. She is known for often wearing chunky Yeezy sneakers, including custom designs, as well as fluffy slide sandals by children’s brands including Akid. However, in recent months, she’s also adopted an edgy aesthetic, wearing styles like leather combat boots and Balenciaga’s nameplate platform Crocs clogs.
