Renowned director Sofia Coppola graced the cover of W Magazine’s Volume five, The Originals issue.
The creative sat down with W’s editor-at-large Lynn Hirschberg to discuss all things “Priscilla,” her latest film about Priscilla Presley’s relationship with Elvis, and also talk about growing up with her father, Francis Ford Coppola, fashion faux-pas and address issues of female power and resilience.
Intimately photographed by the great Steven Meisel in black and white, the “Marie Antoinette” director was outfitted in a sleek and sensual pair of black slingback pumps from Chanel. Giving old Hollywood glamour, Sofia was outfitted in an array of dresses and sets featuring feather and sequined detailing hailing from the likes of Prada, Dries Van Noten, Chanel and Schiaparelli.

“By day, Priscilla went to Catholic school in Memphis for her senior year, and at night she would party with Elvis…I found that reality fascinating: She wasn’t allowed to have friends over to Graceland, and she’d hear other girls whispering about her. She was so isolated,” said Sofia in regards to what drew her to the weird and wonderful life of Priscilla Presley.
“It was strangely relatable: In my 20s, I remember having a crush on a guy, and part of it was, if I was with him, then I wouldn’t have to develop an identity of my own: I could just be the girlfriend of this guy, and that would be so much easier. I was devastated when that relation- ship didn’t work out. But it forced me to find my own personality, and that’s a similar story to what happened with Priscilla—she lost herself in Elvis.” “Priscilla” is slated to release on Nov. 3.
In a short video accompanying her cover, Sofia also broke down her book constructed of 488 personal images taken on the set of her past and present films from hits like “Lost in Translation, “The Virgin Suicides” and “The Bling Ring” among others aptly titled Archive.
