With the launch of “FIFA 17″ on Sept. 27, EA Sports will add yet another chapter to its long-running soccer video game legacy. Similarly, Nike‘s established quite the legacy on the pitch with its Mercurial cleat range. The two powerhouses are about to collaborate on a limited-edition boot that merges both worlds.
The EA Sports x Nike Mercurial Superfly “FIFA 17” celebrates the video game’s history and worldwide popularity, which boasts more than 3 million active players daily. It features references to FIFA’s 1994 roots with pixelated 16-bit graphics along with today’s high-definition renderings to show how far the game has come.
“Our design team spends a lot of our free time playing football — both on the pitch and via video game — we’re pretty obsessed with both. We wanted to create something memorable that brings together the physical and virtual worlds,” Nathan Van Hook, senior design director for Nike Football, said in a statement.
Along with a prominent feature in the upcoming “FIFA 17” video game, these EA Sports x Nike Mercurial Superfly cleats will also be available in limited numbers. They’re individually numbered through 1,500 pairs and will be available on Sept. 26 through the Nike Football App and nike.com. Meanwhile, the in-game cleats will be released on Sept. 22 via the EA Sports Football Club Catalog.
