Ancient Greek Sandals Partners with Caravana On ‘Tulum’ Capsule Collection

Ancient Greek Sandals and Caravana have teamed up to produce a capsule collection. Titled Tulum, the line offers five styles of leather sandals, bringing together elements of the founders’ Greek and Mexican heritages and reinforcing their commitment to craftsmanship.

Given their mutual appreciation for antique civilizations and artisanal work, Christina Martini and Nicholas Minoglou of Ancient Greek Sandals immediately found synergy working with Caravana’s Francesca Bonato and Jacobo Janniello.

“We were fascinated by Francesca’s and Jack’s idea to go to Mexico and work with a small community of artisans, exploring all areas of Mexican traditional techniques, from weaving to leather-tanning. We felt like we had a common destination and that something unique and powerful would come out of this,” said Martini.

Best recognized for its ethnic beachwear and accessories, Caravana works with craftspeople in Mexico who use traditional techniques, pulling each kaftans’ threads by hand and creating intricate patterns.

Minoglu and Martini have become known for their leather sandals, which are inspired by ancient Greece and produced locally.

Working together, the two pairs of designers combined their references, drawing inspiration from a varied set of images of the Greek coastline, traditional sculptures and elements of Mayan culture. The result includes re-worked versions of five key styles by Ancient Greek Sandals, produced  usingMexican leather and traditional techniques of Tulum-based artisans. Feathers also became a key motif, often replacing the signature wings of Ancient Greek sandals or embellishing the popular laceup styles.

The collection will be sold in the Coqui Coqui boutique in Mexico, as well as online on the Ancient Greek Sandals website.

The collaboration will continue with the forthcoming Mykonos Collection, to be launched in the summer of 2016 and sold at a pop-up shop that Caravana will open at the island’s popular beach restaurant, Scorpios.
