Class Acts: Iconic Shoes Spanning 70 Years

In tandem with FN’s gallery of 70 iconic shoes, our latest fashion shoot from our 70th Anniversary Issue highlights iconic shoes spanning the past 70 years (and beyond).

The styles here still move to a modern beat, from forever-now sneakers to timeless stilettos.

The idea to spotlight shoes that have stood the test of time occurred in a traffic jam between market appointments to view the latest collections, said Fashion Director Mosha Lundström Halbert. “With so much newness each season, we were struck by how rare it is to see truly enduring styles — like lightning in a bottle,” she said.

A stripped-back concept followed, with an emphasis on expressive movement. And who better to put these varied pairs through their paces than shape-shifter dancers Dustin Layton, now on Broadway in “An American In Paris,” and ballerina/model Sage Humphries? En pointe, indeed.

Photographer Geoff Barrenger used the dancers’ movement to complement the footwear. “Using dancers to present all of these shoes was an opportunity to create timeless images with shape and form,” he said. “I think it turned out wonderfully.”
