The fashion community mourned the death of famed architect Zaha Hadid on social media Thursday afternoon. Hadid died on Thursday at age 65. According to a statement on her website, she suffered a fatal heart attack in a Miami hospital while being treated for bronchitis.

The Iraqi-born architect, the mastermind behind many architectural wonders, was remembered as a “true genius,” by Prabal Gurung. “Her use of architectural and graphic lines inspired our debut collection for fall 2009,” the designer wrote on Instagram.

The architect worked closely with many designers over the years, including Stuart Weitzman. She designed the designer’s Hong Kong and Milan flagship locations.

She also collaborated with Lacoste several years ago. Featuring a digitized version of Lacoste’s famous croc logo and a pliable, coiled strap system, the styles brought Hadid’s signature look to footwear for men (an ankle boot) and women (a calf boot).

United Nude and Melissa were other labels that partnered with the architect on innovative styles.

“The collaboration with architect Zaha Hadid was fantastic. She’s one of the most important women out there,” Michelle Levy, president of Melissa’s U.S. division, told FN in 2009.
