Exclusive: Kelly Cutrone Reveals How She Threw a Rooftop Fashion Show With Anna Delvey

In one of the more viral moments from New York Fashion Week‘s spring 2024 season, Anna Delvey returned to the runway while under house arrest — all thanks to famed publicist Kelly Cutrone.

“We’re in pop culture — people have ideas of what I’m about and what she’s about, and it was just really fun to come together,” Cutrone exclusively told FN. “As our pop culture personas, but also individually as women, and we had a really good time. She’s super smart. She knows how the world works. She has a very fast mind, and it was really fun to run an event with her.”

(L-R): Anna Delvey and Kelly Cutrone produce the SHAO fashion show in the East Village during New York Fashion Week on Sept. 11, 2023.

Cutrone and Delvey’s show, the first for Shao Yung’s independent brand SHAO, was thrown under their new talent agency OutLaw Agency. Given Delvey’s current house arrest, the event was hosted on her apartment building’s rooftop for around 50 guests — which Cutrone, who united with Delvey after hearing how the former previously watched her on TV, didn’t anticipate. However, the pair utilized Yung’s showroom, a next-door restaurant and a party bus as additional workspaces, with models leaving the former — after the day’s torrential rain surprisingly stopped — in a viral fashion moment.

“We just broke out into a fashion show right there, one by one, with a kid getting framed as they came off the bus with a soundtrack from ‘The Sopranos’ on,” said Cutrone, who also utilized Yung’s showroom, a next-door restaurant and a party bus as additional workspaces. “I just felt like it was time to shake it up. And I always felt like it was our gift to the work and the people that live there to have a cool outlaw show, have a good party and do something real.”

Cutrone’s no stranger to viral moments, thanks to many from both her fashion clients and herself over the years. However, the widespread response to Delvey’s show — which she deemed a “bad girl story” — has been a strongly positive one in the PR icon’s eyes.

“We have to take success into our own hands — we can’t just wait around for someone else to do it for us, and that’s what that show is about,” Cutrone explained. “You know, we took our own success into our hands. And you know, we played it down the field and it worked and I’m happy about it. You know? It’s really that’s how it should be. I wish it could be like that every season.”

Despite the event’s aforementioned challenges, guests in attendance — like model and Cancel Communications founder Matthew Cancel — have made the show viral due to their belief in Delvey’s future, following her former criminal charges and current house arrest.

“I think she’s a very fascinating character, and I think people are kind of…she’s paid for her sins, she’s done her time, she is doing her reparations. And I think people are ready to give her a second shot.”

NYFW is held in New York City in September, marking the start of Fashion Month. The spring 2024 season will see a calendar of fashion shows and presentations from a range of designers, including Ralph Lauren, Christian Siriano, Proenza Schouler and more. The occasion will also include numerous parties and activations from brands like Aldo, J.Crew, MCM and more.
