Dolce & Gabbana’s velvet Mary-Janes had rosebuds bursting at the vamp for full-tilt romance, with a side of Italian high-style kitsch.
Bottega Veneta stepped out of their usual subdued box with quirky gold foil knee-high boots. With a squared-off toe and buckling, they had a mod bent that matched the collection’s sharp lines.
Emerging talent Marco de Vincenzo’s tubular braided sandals in high-shine silks were a fresh take on the fall ’15 footwear trend towards voluminous flourishes. They highlighted his specialties: textile innovation, unique shapes and an eye for concentrated color.
Prada borrowed from sister label Miu Miu’s decidedly more adorable DNA for satin pointed-toe block-heel Mary Janes, which had an uncharacteristic cuteness. The flare block heel and double-strapping are likely to spark major trends.

Milan is the indisputable footwear capital of the world, so expectations are exceptionally high for footwear of supreme quality, material innovation and overall style.
The first day of Fashion Week here got off to a diverse start, with the runways highlighting everything from Stella Jean’s socks-and-sandals duos to furry footwear creatures at Gucci. But it was Gucci’s fur-pompom style that took FN’s first Shoe of the Day in Milan.
The low-heeled ballerina with interlaced strapping had all the trappings of a novelty shoe, except that it was cast in toned-down black leather. Balanced frivolity at its best.
