According to costume designer Sarah Evelyn, Hudson was a truck driver. “There wasn’t many photos of him in the early days,” she said. “We took those photos later in life and vibed what we thought he would be but altering it with more of an all-American feel.”

Patti Lupone stars as Avis, a studio head, whose wardrobe was inspired by Barbara Stanwyck and Joan Crawford. “She can pull off a costume,” said Evelyn. “She’s willing to take risks and wear the traditional undergarments. She just gives it her all and doesn’t even have any pause.”

The last epsiode of the series takes place at the Oscars and four days before the shoot, creator Ryan Murphy wanted the look to be a sea of pastels. “It ended up being a beautiful iconic look for the ending,” said costume collaborator Lou Eyrich. “Sarah and her team had to work extra hard to make it happen and it was gorgeous.”
