In a scrappy battle against a young Nigerian team, the U.S. Women’s National Team triumphed on Tuesday 1-0 to advance into the next round of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Veteran player Abby Wambach won the day for the U.S. with a goal just before halftime that went unanswered in the remainder of the game. Working off a corner kick from Megan Rapinoe, 35-year-old Wambach, who was playing in Nike’s Mercurial Superfly FG cleats, leaped into the air and rocketed the ball past Nigerian goaltender Precious Dede and into the net. It was Wambach’s 14th career goal in a World Cup competition.
As FN has previously reported, several of the team members have been sporting the Mercurial Superfly FG style, which features a Dynamic Fit collar and one-piece upper without a tongue — ideal for an attacking striker. And the shoes appear to be doing their job, as the athletes played one of their most solid games yet together on Tuesday.
Thanks to this latest win, the U.S. has secured the No. 1 spot for Group D. It previously defeated Australia on June 8 and tied Sweden last Friday. That puts the team in a favorable position as they move on to the round of 16, where they ideally will be matched up with an easier, third-place opponent from another group.
