A sixth grade student from Colorado is doing his part to stamp out bullying after a horrific incident at school left him on a hospital bed with a punctured lung.
Colorado Springs middle schooler Kyler Davila, 11, already had his mind set on holding an anti-bullying shoe giveaway days before he was attacked by a fellow student, according to a report from The Gazette.”It’s just not fair that people pick on you because of stuff you wear on your feet,” Davila told the publication.
According to the report, Davila was stabbed on Oct. 7 with a pencil in his school’s hallway, an injury that required him to spend a weekend in a nearby hospital for trauma surgery and forced him to use a temporary breathing tube. Despite the setback, the Carmel Middle School student followed through on plans to hold his “Kyler’s Kicks” giveaway, which he created to ensure that other kids wouldn’t be bullied because of their shoes.
“He’s being a positive role model even after being bullied. He’s setting an example for other people to be more kind, especially the kids who are doing the bullying,” Kyler’s father, Nicholas, told The Gazette.

The “Kyler’s Kicks” giveaway took place on Oct. 22 and offered around 80 pairs of new and used shoes for the taking. According to The Gazette, more than a dozen people left the giveaway with new footwear. After the success of the first event, the sixth grader hopes to host another giveaway soon.
After the fight, friends of the Davila family held a protest outside of the Harrison School District Two building in Colorado Springs for how the situation was handled by administration, according to fox21news.com.
“They should have called 911. I mean, if you don’t know how to call 911 when somebody’s stabbed in the chest and can’t breathe, then there’s something wrong with you,” Aaron Coates, a local protester, told fox21news.com.
