Who Should Reebok’s UFC Champ Conor McGregor Fight Next?

When UFC fighters want a payday or their name in the news, they call out Conor McGregor. Lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez is the latest star to request a meeting in the octagon with the Irish fighter, stating he’d like to fight the Reebok-sponsored athlete at UFC 205.

Alvarez took to Twitter on Sept. 20 to take a shot at McGregor, stating, “Your futures not bright enjoy this one while it last.” Although not a direct reply to his message, McGregor posted a simple two-word tweet that is most likely a reply to the champ: “Beg me.” But Dana White, president of UFC, quickly squashed talk of a McGregor-Alvarez matchup, stating on social media that he’s targeting Khabib Nurmagomedov for Alvarez’s next fight.

A fight with Alvarez makes sense for the UFC. He is a big name, and in July, he beat then-lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos, the man McGregor was supposed to fight at UFC 196. And with UFC 205 being the league’s New York debut — taking place at Madison Square Garden — the UFC needs a big battle to boost the fight card. But if Alvarez is out, who should the Irishman fight next?

Fans of McGregor — who is the featherweight titleholder — would like to see a rematch with José Aldo, the fighter he beat for the belt with a knockout in 13 seconds at UFC 194. Nate Diaz, the opponent he faced during his last two fights (winning one of the two bouts) would also be an entertaining option — although White already ruled it out.

McGregor hasn’t posted any training footage since his last scrap with Diaz. But when preparing for other fights, he’s trained in the Reebok ZPump Fusion 2.0 as well as the brand’s Boxing Boot — Buck.
