New Balance Releasing ‘Made In USA’ Collection

Boston-based athletic brand New Balance is set to debut its Made in USA Distinct Collection: Mid Century Modern Pack, inspired by the mid-century modern design movement of the 1950s and ’60s.

The pack will be available Aug. 1 and will use four of the brand’s classic men’s silhouettes: the 990, 996, 997 and 998.

The shoes are inspired by lines, dimensional textiles and minimalist designs of the mid-century modern design, architecture and urban movement, with colors taken from typical interiors of the ’50s and ’60s. New Balance used woven textiles and Horween leather for the shoes, which are made in New England.

The styles will retail for $200 to $260.

To accompany the shoes, the brand has created 1,000 limited-edition, handcrafted posters made at Repeat Press in Somerville, Mass., using a 1960s Vandercook SP-20 letterpress. The posters for each style are individually numbered and are available at the brand’s premium retailers around the world.

According to New Balance, one out of every four pairs of its shoes sold in 2013 were made or assembled in American factories by American workers.

The brand also launched its “Always in Beta” campaign in early July. The marketing effort’s tagline speaks to the company’s commitment to improving the products created in its more than 100-year history.
